Yeongneung is the joint tomb of the fourth ruler of the Joseon dynasty, King Sejong (1397-1450) and his wife Queen Soheon (1395-1446). Moreover, it was also the first joint royal tomb of the Joseon dynasty.
King Sejong reigned for 32 years as the 4th king of the Joseon Dynasty (1418~1450). During his period of reign, Korean culture developed very quickly.
For instance, in 1443, Sejong and eight advisers created the Korean alphabet “Hangeul” in order to accurately express Korean language sounds and sentence structure. Thanks to the Korean alphabet, more Koreans were able to be literate.
King Sejong has not only supported a cultural development, but also a technological development. For example, he sponsored the development of scientific devices such as the first rain gauge, sundials, unusually accurate water clocks, and maps of the stars and celestial globes.
To conclude, King Sejong is seen nowadays as the greatest Korean king of the Joseon Dynasty.
